Life in 2020 is not the way that we expected it to be, especially not during the holiday season. Going out and doing holiday traditions over break is no longer possible and it is heartbreaking. There are some people who will even be forced to be alone for much of break due to health concerns or for at-risk family members. This does not mean you have to be bored the entire time though.
Here are a few ways to keep yourself busy over the holiday season:
1. Finally learn how to bake bread
Everyone else did at the beginning of COVID-19, so why not try to fit in, right?
2. Start on your reading list
Be honest, you probably bought an entire library over the start of quarantine and told yourself that you would finally start reading for fun, but now it is all collecting dust. Grab a Swiffer Duster and get to work!
3. Start writing that novel you have been putting off for too long
They say we all have at least one in us.
4. Find a new show to watch and binge every episode
That is if you haven’t seen everything on Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ already.
5. Learn how to cook something
And no, a grilled cheese does not count. At least try to adult, will you?
6. Bake your entire weight in holiday treats
They will pair nicely with your binge-watching sessions. They also make really great presents for friends and family.
7. Sleep for 48 hours straight
No one will blame you after the year we have all had.
8. Experiment with your hair
It is not like anyone is going to see it anyway.
9. Start a journal and record your hopes for 2021
And then hope it is at least a little better than 2020. Knock on wood.
10. Start working out
I know we have all been lazy, but it is time.
11. Create a bucket list of all the things you want to do when it is safe to be around people again some day
And fingers crossed that it happens before we are all old and grey. Ooh! Grey! You can binge-watch Grey’s Anatomy! There’s no way you can be bored in the house with that one.
12. Revamp your wardrobe
As Sharpay Evans once said “Out with the old, in with the new.”
13. Declutter your home
You cannot use the homework excuse anymore. I promise you will be so much better. If it does not bring you joy, toss it out or donate it!
14. Finally donate that bag of old clothes collecting dust
And do not even try to lie about it. We all know it is still sitting in the trunk of your car.
15. Download TikTok if you have not already
Have you been living under a rock this entire year?
16. Try your hand at content creation
It is really fun and works wonders on your confidence levels.
17. Make a plan for classes if you go back for Spring 2021
I know you always say you are going to do it, but times are hard enough. Make life a little easier on yourself and stick to a real schedule.
18. Learn a new hobby
Knitting, candle making, and flower arrangement are just a few examples. Whatever it is, just make sure it is something that will help relieve some of life’s stress.
19. Start a nighty meditation routine
Life can be insane, especially these days. Through all of it, we can sometimes forget to check in with ourselves. Meditation is a relaxing way to do that before bed.
20. Pamper yourself with a spa day
Go buy some face masks (the relaxing kind, not the COVID-19 kind), and bath bombs and crack open a pint of Ben and Jerry’s (or some wine if you are legally allowed to do so) and just have a me day. It is okay to take care of yourself for once and be a little selfish.
Whatever it is you decide to do, just remember to enjoy yourself over this upcoming holiday season. Just because we have to break some of our normal holiday traditions does not mean we cannot make new ones and have some safe fun while doing it!
