By now, all major professional sports leagues have suspended their seasons. These drastic and sudden actions have put the sports world on notice and alerted fans to the serious nature of the novel coronavirus.
Although NBA fans have pointed to Utah Jazz star center Rudy Gobert as the main reason for the season suspension, the fact that all other sports quickly followed in their footsteps proves that the suspension was inevitable.
Gobert had used a press conference as an opportunity to make light of the potential threat of the virus, making a point to touch every microphone and recorder in the room. Not long after, he tested positive for COVID-19. To make things worse, soon after his teammate Donovan Mitchell caught the virus.
Although his actions were foolish, Gobert has since acknowledged his ignorance of the subject, fully apologized for his mistakes, and expressed his hope that people will learn from his actions. People are going to make mistakes throughout this pandemic, and the important thing is that we continue to spread information on how to control and mitigate the effects of COVID-19.
I can certainly speak for all sports fans when I say that it’s a major bummer that seasons are getting suspended and tournaments are being canceled. And these actions are certainly going to make it difficult to find topics for my professional sports blog, but these preventative measures are absolutely necessary to fight against the spread of the virus.
Everyone can learn from Gobert’s and the NBA’s actions. In these situations, it’s so much better to be safe than sorry. Even if you’re not part of the groups that are most at-risk, putting yourself in situation where you can easily contract and spread the virus is irresponsible and endangering to others.
Pandemics such as this require global cooperation, and therefore I implore you to practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently, and stay home when you can (ESPECIALLY when you’re feeling sick).
These small actions taken on a large scale may not completely stop the spread of the virus, but they will certainly slow the spread of the virus and allow the brightest minds among us to more easily develop a vaccine for it.
And if you don’t care about the wellbeing of your fellow man, remember this: the quicker the spread of the virus is controlled and dealt with, the quicker we’ll be able to get back our beloved sports.
