While this year’s draft class was definitely one for the books, one position that will always be in high demand are QBs. Those who received plenty of attention at this years combine include Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold just to name a few. But, there are 32 teams in the NFL which makes it a tight race to see who end up developing one of these young QBs. The questions that arise now is which teams will select a QB in the first round? Will any teams wait until Day 3? With all of this in mind, let’s take a look at which teams are most likely going to draft a QB:
1) Cleveland Browns
This one is a no brainer as they literally have no QB. Second year DeShone Kizer was traded off to the Packers last week in exchange for DB Damarious Randle after he proved to be a bust last season. It will be crucial that the Browns make a smart move as they have struggled in the last few years with drafting a proficient QB. I think they will select USC QB Sam Darnold as the first overall pick. There other option could be Josh Allen, who is known for his consistency.
2) New York Giants
This one could be a hit or miss as the Giants hope to get one more season out of 38-year-old Eli Manning. We all know the debacle of when Ben McAdoo wanted to bench Manning in favor of Geno Smith which ended up causing a whole controversy. But while the Giants hope to have Eli as starter, they have to be realistic and start giving 2nd year Davis Web some experience as he hopes to become a starter someday.
3) Denver Broncos
It is expected that the Broncos will use their No. 5 pick on a QB. Again, they want a QB they can develop and eventually turn into a franchise QB. I believe that they will select Josh Rosen who will be leaving UCLA after his junior year. He would most likely backup Case Keenum, who recently signed a 2 year, $36 million dollar offer.
4) New York Jets
While it’s likely the Jets will try to go for Saquon Barkley or Bradley Chubb, it would be silly if they didn’t aim to draft a QB with their third pick (since they traded four draft picks to move up three spots). Possible candidates appear to be Josh Allen and Josh Rosen, but it’s also a possibility they try to go for Baker Mayfield. Then again, I think he will be selected within the first two rounds of the draft.
5) Los Angeles Chargers
The last time the Chargers drafted a QB was back in 2013. It is now 2018 and Philip Rivers is turning 37 years old this season. Eventually, the Chargers need to start thinking long term about a younger QB to take over for Rivers. Head Coach Anthony Lynn attended the pro days and paid special attention to Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, but this is the second straight year where they’ve been looking into a QB. I expect them to draft one on the second day as they will probably use their first-round pick to draft a Defensive Tackle.
The 2018 NFL Draft will take place on April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
