As the end of summer seems to be creeping up and it will soon be
football season once again, college football prognosticator Phil Steele
has acknowledged three Illinois State players as pre-season
The news was put on Steele’s website, PhilSteele.com, where he has broken down every team and conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). On Tuesday, July 16 Steele recognized Redbirds, Colton Underwood, Jordan Neukirch and Chris Highland as Preseason All-Americans.
Senior defensive end, Underwood was also named preseason All-American and Buck Buchanan Award Watch List member by The Sports Network. Underwood was selected as a first-team preseason All-American by Steele. Junior fullback, Jordan Neukirch was designated to the second team while junior longsnapper, Chris Highland was selected as third-team on the list. The Sports Network also picked Neukirch and Highland as third-team preseason All-Americans.
All three of these Redbirds were chosen as First-Team All-MVFC preseason selections. Another ’Bird that was added to this list was senior offensive tackle Josh Aladenoye.
Underwood was also selected to be the league’s preseason pick to win the defensive player of the year award. Lechein Neblett, junior wideout and James O’Shaughnessy, junior tight end were chosen as second-team preseason All-MVFC picks. On the defensive side, Mike Banks was also chosen as second-team selection.
The 2013 season will open for the Redbirds on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Muncie, Ind., against Ball State. The newly-renovated Hancock Stadium will be open to the public when the Redbirds play in their home opener on Sept. 21, against Abilene Christian.
