If there is anything college students are good at, it’s procrastinating. And when ISU students are trying to put off starting homework, one of their first stops is the ISU Secret Admirer Facebook page.
While scrolling through all the drama and romantic posts, everyone is silently praying that they will happen across their own name. But does anyone ever think about what it must be like to run a site where people pour out their most intimate desires? “Muddy,” the girl behind everyone’s guilty pleasure, tells all.
What is the craziest thing you have seen running the page?
Well, you’re supposed to go to the link in the description to post your admiration, so that it’s anonymous. But sometimes people don’t do that and they just send a message to me. Sometimes I get messages from people I know, so I know who they have a crush on and they have no idea. In fact, I’ve noticed that a few guys I know have actually been posting love interests about other guys, and they have no idea I know their secret.
Have you ever been mentioned by an admirer?
Yes! I have been mentioned four times, and then two other times I wasn’t sure if the description was actually about me. It really bummed me out when I got them, because I couldn’t tell who they were from! One other time I even got mentioned by my alias, which was weird, because it meant they had no idea who I really was! One of my mentions was actually really sweet, and it was from one of my fellow BRMM (Big Red Marching Machine) members, but I still haven’t figured out who it is. And yet, I’m still hopelessly single.
Have you ever written a secret admirer post?
Oh god. Yes. I am such a hopeless romantic! But I only write them if a guy really sparks my interest. But I must admit, it’s always been my dream to see a post about me written by a guy that I also noticed.
Are there some posts that you intentionally leave off the page?
Yes. I definitely try not to post anything mean, because my page is not about ruining someone’s day, it’s about making people feel better! And I’ll admit, sometimes I’ll get a post about a girl I don’t like and I really think about not putting it on the page, but I always do. Even though I don’t like the girl, every girl deserves that warm feeling they get when they get a post about them.
What is the best part about running the site?
I guess just the self-fulfillment and knowing that I run something so successful! It’s actually quite annoying to run the site in general, especially with no real recognition for my work, but it still is cool to think that I run the page.
What is the worst part?
Well, I’ve posted about 2,700 posts in the past year or so, and that’s a lot of copy-pasting. It sucks to be stuck mindlessly copying and pasting those posts for so long. But another thing that sucks is that I have to see and read every single one, and, being a girl, when I read all these cute posts about other girls, I’ll admit that it does get me down.
Why did you choose the alias Muddy?
Well, when I was in middle school, the new “Pokémon: Ruby” version had just been released. I chose the starter Pokémon Mudkip, and with my young brain, I decided to name it “Muddy.” I loved that Mudkip so much, that I decided to steal its name and make it part of my gamer tag. Then when I made this page, I knew I wanted a cool alias, so I just stuck with Muddy.
Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?
I feel so good about this page and I’m so happy I can help people feel good about themselves every day and encourage love around campus. I hope you guys find the people you are looking for and fall in love and all that good stuff. If you ever feel down, and you have no one to talk to, feel free to message me on the page, because I want to help the campus as much as I can. Just remember everyone: you might feel lonely, and feel that you will never find someone to love, but there is someone for everyone out there. The longer you wait for this mystery person, the more it will be worth it when you do find the love of your life. Happy hunting! Stay classy, ISU.
