The Illinois State women’s golf team will open its fall schedule with the Redbird Invitational beginning Sunday at ISU’s Weibring Golf Club in Normal.
The Redbirds’ fall season will consist of five tournaments before a three month layoff, after which they will compete in six tournaments during the spring season.
“We have a great mix of events this year that allows us to compete with the best,” head coach Darby Sligh said on goredbirds.com. “A huge highlight of the fall season will be the Golfweek Conference Challenge, where we will be representing the Missouri Valley Conference in Colorado against some of the most prestigious conferences in the country.
“Above all else, this schedule provides a great balance of opportunities for the student-athletes to experience new places and compete against teams that will push us to be better.”
The 2013-14 ’Birds are stacked with veteran leadership with four returning seniors — Brianna Cooper, Carlee
Cossell, Rachel Powers and Jordyn Wyzgowski.
Hayley Guyton, junior, and Courtnee Cossell, sophomore, round out the six-woman team.
During the 2011-12 season, Cooper had a season stroke average of 76.2 and finished third at the Imes Invitational with a three round season best score of 216 (70-72-74).
After the Redbird Invitational, the team will travel to the Cardinal Cup in Louisville (Sept. 16-17); the Golfweek Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. (Sept. 23-25); the LPGA Xavier Invitational at the International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. (Oct. 5-7); and its final tournament of the fall season, the Hoosier Fall Invitational hosted by Indiana at the Hickory Sticky Golf Club in Greenwood, Ind. (Oct. 19-20).
