The beginning of school is my favorite time of the year. It’s the start of new beginnings with a fresh outlook on the upcoming school year. Along with school starting, I have another excitement…cheerleading is back. Games, events and appearances will start to fill my time while I’m not in the classroom. It is what you can call “my escape” from the real world.
Besides getting a front row seat to games, I think that the events and appearances come in a close second in my favorite part about cheer. This past Friday was the first of many appearances for the ISU Cheerleading team. A group of us had the opportunity to walk in the Sheridan Back to School Parade. We’ve done this parade since I started here at ISU three years ago and it’s something I look forward to every year. We walk through the parade while children scream and cheer for us…what’s not to love? This isn’t your typical parade. There is not candy thrown out or pencils and such. Just a simple high five works for these kids. I think the best part is, besides the wonderful refreshments awaiting us at the end, hearing the little boys and girls yell, “Look! There are the cheerleaders” at every turn of a corner. When I hear that reaction I feel like the coolest kid in school.
I don’t expect anyone to look at me any different in a uniform, but they do. Getting notarized by these kids is unbelievable. It just warms my heart. We do not only influence these kids, but they influence us. I love my job of representing ISU Athletics and seeing children react to me makes it even more enjoyable. The title of being an ISU Cheerleader is something that I don’t take for granted, and I never will.
