No matter which side of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” argument you may be on, an event coming to the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) is sure to perk your interests.
“SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody” will be coming to Bloomington one night only at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the BCPA. This is a hilarious, unauthorized parody of the raunchy best-seller — it’s a musical!
The show is directed by Jim Millan, was written in collaboration by Millan with Alice Moran, Colin Munch, Anne Marie Scheffler, Patrick Whalen, Ian MacIntyre and Jon Blair.
The performance’s cast includes only three characters including Hugh Hanson, the Christian Grey-like character, Tasha Woode, the Anna Steele-like character and finally E.B. Janet, a character based roughly off of E.L. James, author of the Fifty Shades trilogy.
Suzanne Sole, who plays E.B. Janet and other characters in the play, was able to give more insight on the production, and the nature of the show itself.
“‘SPANK!’ mixes the idea of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ with the idea of how a novel like this would have come to be … So we incorporate Chardonnay,” Sole said.
“I sit at my keyboard with this little Chardonnay and write the sex novel of the century. The storyline is similar to the Fifty Shades books, loosely based of course, with similar characters names,” Sole added.
Sole describes her character, E.B. Janet, as the narrator of the musical itself, propelling the action with a song and metatheatrical conversations with the characters.
“E.B. Janet creates the characters, puts them into action and then they continue to interact with her throughout the show, sometimes even going so far as to ‘argue with [her].’”
Sole’s role does not stop here, however.
The actress also plays three other minor characters throughout the show, including the best friend of the female lead, named José, her roommate Kate and a French maître d’.
This is what makes this show so special, although the BCPA does warn on its website that “SPANK!” contains adult content, those attending the production should not fear the heaviness that is often described by readers of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy.
The parody is strictly comical and the perfect night out whether you are planning on a girl’s night out, or an evening with your significant other.
Due to this highly theatrical and comical content, those who have not read the “Fifty Shades” trilogy will not feel left out if they come to see the show.
“People who read the books enjoy it,” Sole said. “And people who haven’t read the books found it hilarious as well.”
Important to note is the fact that although the productions website mentions that “SPANK!” is often started off with a brief cocktail hour, the BCPA will not be hosting one. There will, however, be a meet-and-greet with the actors after the show. Be sure to stick around for a picture with the cast.
“SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody” is a night of comedy that is not to be missed. It is the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, to reunite with friends or to simply enjoy the last moments of the weekend before returning to the office on Monday morning — and remember Blo-No, this show is here for one night only, do not miss out on your opportunity to get spanked by some good comedy.
Tickets for the show are only $39.50 and can be purchased on the BCPA website or at their box office, located at 600 N. East St., Bloomington, Illinois.
