College students will have to find a new way to get to bars while drinking at night. Bloomington City Council approved the ban for consumption of alcohol on “party buses.” The council had its meeting on Monday, where they voted 6-2 to approve the ban.
The idea came from the recent Downtown Nightlife Revitalization workshop. Mayor Tari Renner said that downtown Bloomington needs cleaning up. Renner also said that downtown will be safe and clean and that they are making progress through this ban being approved.
Many, however, do not believe this ordinance will actually solve the problem. There is also talk of sting operations being held on the buses to reinforce the ban, which many believe is unnecessary.
This all stems back to a situation this past spring where a party bus was shut down on the way to Champaign. There were 51 citations issued for underage drinking as well as many safety violations.
Whether this will slow down the traffic in downtown Bloomington is unknown.
