Over the summer, actress and dirctor Sofia Coppola directed a scandalous movie based off of real events called The Bling Ring. I finally got around to seeing the film this past weekend – it was long overdue. The movie follows the lives of five, wealthy high schoolers: Rebecca, Marc, Nicki, Chloe, and Sam, living in Los Angeles who attend a nontraditional school. It is a school for those kids who have either been kicked out of a previous school or have run into trouble with the law. The students are the type of kids who get bored too easily and then look for things to do. The activities that this group of kids choose are illegal activities like stealing and trespassing on the homes and belongings of famous, Hollywood celebrities.
Rebecca, the instigator of these dubious ideas, is played by Katie Chang. Katie is a resident of Winnetka, IL and went to New Trier High School. Cheers for a fellow Illinoisan! Emma Watson is the most recognized actress in the movie. She plays Nicki, a homeschooled, wannabe model/Hollywood socialite. Together, these two, and their three friends tear up the night club scene and use Google to find the addresses of celebrities out of town for the night. Some of the celebs that are robbed blind are Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, and Audrina Patridge from The Hills.
Overall, IMBD gave The Bling Ring three out of five stars and a rating of 5.8 out of 10. I am going to go ahead and agree with those statistics. In my opinion, it is a good movie. The actors all do a good job of portraying bored, troubled kids, but The Bling Ring was way more suspenseful than I had assumed. Between the music and all the illegalities happening, I found myself anxious and concerned.
The fact that this movie is based on real events is astonishing. Once you watch it, you will see what I mean. The ideas and lengths the group goes to to enter and take from the celebrities they admire is so over the top. I feel guilty if I have to cancel on a group meeting because I have to go to work… I could never, ever be able to waltz into Paris Hilton’s mansion and just casually hang out in her room and take what I please.
See for yourself! The Bling Ring is available OnDemand and by DVD on Netflix.
