Following a tough loss on the road at Missouri State last Saturday, the Redbirds (2-3, 1-1) returned for Homecoming thirsty for a victory against the Western Illinois Leathernecks (3-3, 1-1) and came out on top 35-21 Saturday in Normal.
After ISU took a 14-0 lead into halftime, Western threatened in the third quarter and the game was tied 21-21 going into the fourth. Freshman quarterback Blake Winkler connected with Milton Colbert for a 14-yard touchdown pass, and Marshaun Coprich rushed for a 24 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the second victory in as many tries for ISU at the newly renovated Hancock Stadium.
Coprich exploded for the best game of his Redbird career. He had career highs in carries (24), yards (124), and touchdowns (3). Winkler bounced back after a tough game last week and went 20-for-29 for 234 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
