On Wednesday afternoon I was lucky enough to talk one-on-one to the former child star and pop sensation, Aaron Carter. It was every girl’s twelve-year-old dream come true.
After years away from the pop scene he is back for his After Party Tour, giving his old fans another chance to see him perform live. He gave me the inside scoop about his tour, his love life, and his upcoming album.
K:So can you tell me a little bit about your tour?
A:We started in February and it’s been eight years since I’ve toured. I’ve been performing on and off Broadway shows. Finally a booking agent booked me a tour. They believed in me and thought what I was doing was fantastic. We started [touring] February 22.
It all started with a DJ and two dancers and I actually decided it was time to bring back, for the second leg of the tour, my band that I have done four other headlining tours with when I was a kid and when I was a teenager. So I brought back those musicians and we just played live and tried to make it funky and played renditions of “Aaron’s Party,” “How I Beat Shaq”.
How will The After Party Tour be different from your past tours?
I’m more like a front man of a band now, and I’m there to entertain you. I’ve taken all the things I’ve learned from other artists that worked with me, like Michael Jackson, and applied it to my show and to the tour.
It’s been eight years since you’ve been on tour? What’s it like to be back on the road again?
It’s absolutely incredible and I’m in shock, you know? I didn’t think I was ever going to be able to do this again. And I think a lot of people didn’t either.
Well we are very glad that you are. Your fan’s dreams are coming true. I’ve been looking forward to your concert on the seventh for months now.
That is amazing. That makes me so happy to hear. It really does. Because it’s been a long time and I’ve been trying to figure things out.
When I was like 15 my parents started the process of their divorce and they were my managers. When that was over I was 18 and I was on my own. I had to figure things out myself. Fortunately, I’ve had people there like my sister, B.J.; she’s always been there for me.
So should your fans be expecting any new music from you?
I’m going to preview some new songs, but the music for the album is really being kept under wraps. So I’ll just leave it at that.
You’re coming out with a new album?
Yes. It’s being worked on and it’s going to be great. It’s going to be very Bruno Mars and Sting.
That sounds great! Are you going to give a preview of that at the concert Monday?
Is there anything you’d like to say to your ISU fans that you’ll be seeing at your concert?
I just want to tell everybody thank you for believing in me and for coming out, not knowing what to expect. I mean it’s no secret to me, you know.
I know there are people out there who don’t like me, but I’m just doing me and it’s actually been pleasantly surprising, the support that I’ve had on the tour, and then what people have to say after I do my thing.
A lot of people have seen me on my other tours and I thank them for coming out, but I really want to open my fan base up and get people to understand who I am. I just want everyone to come out, show some love, and I’ll show it right back and do my best to put on a hell of a show.
Speaking of showing love, I’ve seen some pictures on line of you kissing some of your fans. Does that happen at every concert?
Sometimes. I guess I have to feel it in the moment.
So are you single, then?
No, I’m actually dating somebody right now.
What does she think about all this?
I mean it is what it is.
It’s all for the fans, right?
It is. I mean, you know, I’m not married.
So your tour is called The After Party. Will there be an actual after party?
The after party is the show and as far as after that, I guess you’ll just have to see.
Okay, well thank you for taking the time to talk to me. And thank you for going on tour. On behalf of all ‘90s kids, thank you.
Thank you. Honestly, thank you so much for supporting me and being there. It really means so much to me and I really appreciate it.
