In keeping with the winning theme throughout Illinois State athletics over homecoming weekend, the ISU women’s tennis team wrapped up the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships on Sunday in a victorious fashion.
Emmie Marx, Madeliene Baillon and Gabby Phillips each earned MVC singles titles in their respective flights on Sunday in St. Louis, Mo.
“Each weekend we’ve played, we have been making improvements, and it really showed this weekend,” Chris Hoover, head women’s tennis coach, said. “I think we should have won another one of our matches today, but we still came home with three titles, so we’re happy.”
In singles play, Marx defeated Evansville’s Marina Moreno, 6-1, 6-3, for the MVC Flight 3 championship title.
Baillon followed suit, beating Wichita State’s Summer Schlotterback in Flight 6, 6-2, 6-2, to harness her first ever career championship title.
In the Flight 7 match it was a battle of the Redbirds, as Phillips took on fellow teammate Heather Nisbet in the finals. Phillips came out on top, 7-6 (6), 6-3, to secure the Flight 7 conference title.
“It feels great to be crowned an MVC champion. Having won it my freshman year, it felt good to win it again as a senior before I graduate,” Phillips said. “It was tough competition throughout the tournament, so I am proud of myself for this accomplishment.
“Playing against a teammate in a championship match was not easy at all. We are very close friends, and it’s difficult to play against your teammates, especially to win for a title. I tried to stay focused throughout the match and not think about who I was playing. Going into the match, I thought win or lose, Illinois State will win a title, and as a team, that is the most important thing.”
ISU’s Kadi Ilves fell to Drake’s Maddie Johnson, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1, in Flight 5.
In the singles consolation matches, Phyllis Tigges grabbed a victory over Bradley’s Adele Henke, 6-2, 6-2, while Carolina Abello defeated Evansville’s Mina Milovic, 6-0, 6-3.
On the doubles side of play, Baillon and Nisbet fell to WSU’s
