The ISU Women’s Golf Team finished eighth at the LGPA Xavier Invitational on Monday with a score of 929. Senior Rachel Powers tied for fifth place in a strong showing for the Redbirds with some of the better teams in the country.
Powers saved her best for last, as her final round score of 73 was her best round of the invite. Powers’ total score was 222, with round-by-round totals of 74-75-73. She was fifth place after Saturday, then fell to eighth place after Sunday before shooting her 73 on Monday to help her back into the top five.
“Rachel battled extremely well and earned a fifth place finish. I’m excited to see all her hard work paying off,” Coach Darby Sligh said.
Following Powers was Redbird senior Brianna Cooper, who placed 13th with a score of 227 (75-73-79). Next was junior Hayley Guyton in 20th place (231, 77-74-80). Finishing up for the Redbirds was freshman Maggie Ambrose in 68th place (249, 89-79-81) and senior Carlee Cossell in 82nd (259, 90-82-87).
Coach Sligh felt the conditions of the course were a tough challenge for her team, but that they could have finished better.
“We played well all day and just couldn’t seem to all hold it together. Heavy coastal rain came in for our last five holes and derailed our momentum. We need to focus a little harder next time no matter the conditions,” Sligh said.
The Redbirds finished up day one of action in ninth place as a team, and seventh place after the second day before finally landing in eighth to close the weekend.
Mercer ended up coming in first place with a total score of 893. Next was Daytona State and Morehead State who tied with 901.
Other competing teams were Xavier University, Stetson University, North Florida, Samford University, North Dakota State, McNesse State, Florida Gulf Coast, South Dakota State, Bethune-Cookman, Northern Kentucky, South Dakota, Florida Atlantic, Creighton and North Dakota.
The Redbird women will next compete on Saturday, October 19th in Greenwood, Ind., at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, which will be their final competition of the fall.
