Although relationships can offer many benefits and be extremely valuable, it is important not to forget to keep the relationship you have with yourself as healthy as possible. A fun technique for self-reflection is the concept of “self-dating.” Self-dating is exactly what it implies: going on dates by yourself. Now this may seem bizarre and lonesome in a way but as your self-relationship grows, this idea will begin to become more comfortable and more looked forward to. I am not promoting the idea of going to a restaurant and having an out loud conversation with yourself or anything similar, self-dating is simply spending time alone and allowing for a period of meditation. Meditation is a diverse word and can be interpreted in many ways. Meditation can be through sitting outside on the grass and pondering the mind freely, it can also be by just sitting down and writing down feelings or thoughts about anything relevant to your life.
In the words of John Rohn, “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.”
As the relationship with yourself grows, a picture of who you are and who you want to be will be painted, which is one that cannot be found in a textbook. Enjoy the process of self-dating and if you need a little pick-me-up, feel free to grab yourself some flowers and chocolates as well.
