While I was in Australia, I had the chance to travel to one of the world’s most famous and well known cities, Sydney. Sydney is home to more than just a clown fish named Nemo. Sydney is also home to one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Sydney Opera House. The opera house is iconic and is every tourist’s dream to visit. It is probably the one place in Australia that most tourists talk about. Even to the native Aussies, the opera house is a thing of beauty and not to be overlooked.
I went on a trip to Sydney during my last two weeks abroad in Australia. I did not want to miss this opportunity. I will never forget how I felt when I saw the opera house from the distance. It took my breath away. It was surreal to see the opera house right in front of me, as many people will never get to see it in real life, rather just on television or in a picture. Standing outside was enough for me but the opera house has tours that take you inside. In fact, one of my friends even got the chance to see a ballet performance in the opera house. How often will she get to visit, much less, see a performance in one of the seven wonders of the modern world? Chance of a lifetime, right?
While in Sydney, I also climbed 1,437 steps to the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, another iconic landmark nicknamed the Giant Coat Hanger. The Sydney Harbor Bridge is another tourist attraction that many people love. However, while on my climb, I met many Aussies who had climbed many times before. So the bridge, like the opera house, is an attraction that is loved by all and is not taken for granted. And, what a small world–There were two people from Blo-No in my climbing group! What a great experience. The climb began about 3 P. M. and took about three hours to complete. The view at the top was spectacular at sunset. I never imagined being in such a beautiful place. I was on the top of the world. It was surreal as I could see the whole harbor around me. I was so glad I took the climb and did not miss out on this once in a lifetime chance.
Studying abroad gives you a chance to immerse yourself in a new culture. If given the chance, you really should travel as much as you can. You have to experience everything the country and area can offer you. And that is what I did.
