Prior to coming to college, I did not really celebrate breast cancer awareness month because no one in my family has battled breast cancer, so it never really had an impact on me. But once I got to college and was living in the dorms, the month of October took on a whole new meaning. My RA freshman year planned a breast cancer awareness program for our whole floor. During thet program I learned a lot about breast cancer awareness. Along with that, there are plenty of activities on campus and in the Bloomington-Normal area that contribute to breast cancer awareness. With all of these activities going on, it is hard not to get interested in this issue and want to do your part to help out and create awareness.
My favorite part of the program my RA planned was having pink hair extensions glued in our hair. Before you knew it, all the girls on the floor had pink hair. The idea is that a portion of the money goes to breast cancer research. I really liked my pink hair extension. They were made of real human hair and were lightly glued into our hair. My hair extension lasted well into the month of November. The following year, I lived in a different dorm, so I decided to go to a local hair salon in Bloomington-Normal and have a pink hair extension put in again. Lots of people would ask me about why I had pink in my hair. I would tell them, “I am supporting breast cancer awareness.”
Many people have their own ways to create awareness during this month and for me, I choose pink hair.
