Fitness activites to ignite Halloween spirit

During the week of Oct. 28-31, students are welcome to get into the spirit of Halloween by participating in the group fitness classes offered at the Student Fitness Center.

The Halloween-themed classes will offer prizes to the participants who come to class with the best costumes.  Hour-long classes include Zumba Thriller, PJ Pilates, TurBOO Kick, Scary Sculpt, Zumbaween, Blackout Cycle, Superhero Cycle and Kettlebell Nightmare.

The entertaining spin on fitness classes this month will provide students with an opportunity to have some fun while still getting exercise.

“This is our way of bringing the fun aspects of Halloween into group fitness,” Lindy Lunkenheimer, assistant director of fitness, said.  “Everyone loves dressing up and being silly; these classes allow participants to do just that, while staying committed to fitness.”

All participants who attend a class during the week will receive a small prize, like Activate headbands or phone wallets. The participant with the best costume in each class will receive an Activate prize packet. Costumes are not required but the Student Fitness Center encourages dressing up to get into the fun of Halloween.

“Regular exercise is important for a lot of reasons,” Dr. Jean Swearingen, medical director for Student Health Services, said. “It helps to keep the immune system strong, and strengthens muscle, bones and heart.”

Exercising regularly helps maintain a healthy weight and helps relieve stress, she added.

All students and Student Fitness Center members can participate in group fitness at no extra charge.

“We encourage students to participate in group fitness throughout the whole semester, but Halloween gives us a good excuse to just have fun and give away prizes,” Lunkenheimer said.

“It is recommended to exercise at least three to five times a week for at least 30 minutes,” Swearingen said. “The time can be split up during the day, however.”
