The annual Trick-or-Treat for Change fundraising event will be held this year from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday throughout the Bloomington-Normal community.
Teams participating in Trick-or-Treat for Change are encouraged to come in costume as they “trick-or-treat,” but not for candy. Volunteers will collect monetary donations from residents in the Bloomington-Normal community. Also, this year Leadership and Service is celebrating their 10th anniversary of this event.
“Students go off to the communities and get to dress up,” Daniela Lerma, front desk specialist for Leadership and Service said. “Sometimes groups come in with $200 each, so [the money raised] varies from year to year.”
Last year, all of the volunteers raised about $19,000 to go toward the ISU/IWU chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The goal for this year’s event is to raise $22,000.
“We have raised over $60,000 so far and all the proceeds go to Bloomington-Normal, so it stays directly in the area,” Lerma said.
Trick-or-Treat for Change gives students an opportunity to not only see the different neighborhoods in Bloomington-Normal, but also to spread awareness and enjoy the Halloween spirit.
“A lot of students don’t take the time to see what’s happening in the community, but Trick-or-Treat for Change gives them a chance to help in the Bloomington-Normal area,” Lerma said.
Lerma explained that most of the people students visit are nice and want to know more about the volunteers. They want to know their names, majors and just get acquainted. Also, since it is on Halloween, there is plenty of candy available.
“I did it last year with girls on my floor. It was a fun night seeing all the decorations and knowing you’re the one to help out in the community,” Lerma said. “I was trick-or-treating for a cause.”
Check in for Trick-or-Treat for Change will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the Brown Ballroom and volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to the pre-determined neighborhoods.
Registration is still open for anyone who is still interested in volunteering for this event. To register for this service opportunity, visit DeanOfStudents.IllinoisState.edu.
