REO Speedwagon will be making its second appearance within a matter of months in Bloomington-Normal at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the Bone Student Center’s (BSC) Braden Auditorium.
As part of efforts to provide relief to Washington after the tornado that hit the town in November, the rock band came to the twin cities in early December to play a sold out show at the auditorium. The wildly successful concert profits went directly toward benefitting the Washington tornado victims.
The band now plans to return to ISU for a second concert in which a portion of the proceeds will go to the Rock to the Rescue charity, and the rest of the money will be distributed to the City of Washington Tornado Relief Fund, Toys for Tots and several other charities.
“The band was so moved by the devastation they saw when they were here in December, they asked to come back and do more to assist with the relief efforts,” Barb Dallinger, associate director of event logistics and life safety of the BSC, said.
Dallinger encourages students to buy tickets as soon as possible — the BSC will also be offering a $10 student discount on tickets today starting at 10 a.m. Tickets are $30 to $60.
“Of course I think [students will] have a lot of fun, but more than that it’s a chance to give back to a community that is suffering,” Dallinger said. “Several hundred of our own Illinois State students were affected by the November tornadoes that went through central Illinois.
“It’s a chance to help not just the local area, but also fellow Redbirds … This is a very personal event for us and a passionate show of our support.”
The first Rock to the Rescue sponsored concert received a great response in ticket sales, raising $400,000. The charity first was started after the 9/11 terrorist acts in 2001. REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin and Tommy Shaw of Styx came together to create Rock to the Rescue in an effort to donate a portion of concert incomes to disaster relief funds and local charities.
Students should bring their student IDs to the box office to purchase their tickets and also to the concert. Students will need to show their ticket as well as their ID to the usher upon arrival.
Tickets can be bought at the Braden Box Office and all Ticketmaster Outlets, or log onto BoneStudentCenter.IllinoisState.edu to buy them online.
