First Book McLean County will host Wines of the World, a wine tasting fundraiser for the organization, at 6p.m. Thursday at Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, 3202 E. Empire, Bloomington.
Tickets for the fundraiser will be $40 at the door or $30 in advance. Bremer Jewelry will provide a necklace for the raffle winner. Guests of the event are provided hors d’oeuvres and are welcomed to taste wines from all around the world.
“You can explore your palate and try new wines you might not have been familiar with,” Heather Cushing, First Book advisory chair said.
First Book McLean County, a branch based out of Washington D.C., donates all proceeds to local literacy programs that provide brand new books to children at or below the poverty level.
In the past year, First Book McLean County raised over $30,000 and celebrated the milestone of distributing the 100,000th book since the organization began locally in 2001.
“These children get hand-me-downs, and we want to build that excitement and that pride they get knowing it is theirs,” Cushing said.
All money stays local and directly benefits the children of McLean County. Volunteers are non-paid and work to plan fundraisers and organize the grant process to ensure that the brand new books get into the hands of children.
“We are making an investment in McLean County’s future,” Cushing said.
Research shows that adult literacy directly correlates with the amount of books in a child’s home as they were growing up, according to Cushing. First Book McLean County aims to provide at least 12 books to each child every year.
“It’s so important to support children’s literacy efforts,” Cushing said.
Sponsors of the event are Heritage Wine Cellars, Bremer Jewelry, Holiday Inn Hotel Suites, SMARTPath Education and Baxter’s American Grille.
