ISU alum named NFL coach

Mike Zimmer, a 1979 ISU graduate, was named the new head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Zimmer earned his degree in physical education-teacher education and has over 35 years of coaching experience in college and professional football.

Before being named the head coach of the Vikings, Zimmer took home a Super Bowl ring after serving as the secondary coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 1995. He also achieved the 2009 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors from the Pro Football Writers and from CBSSports.com.

Most recently, Zimmer was the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, who have reached four out of the past five playoffs.
