Sugar Mama Bakery, one of the newer businesses in Bloomington-Normal, recently opened its second location on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in Uptown Normal at 116 W. North St.

The bakery is located right next to Medici and Uptown Gifts and Accessories. The space was previously occupied by the frozen yogurt store Chill Out before it closed in November. Co-owner Krista Gaff and her team wasted no time looking into the space.

“We’re so excited to have this great location,” Gaff said. “We had too many custom orders for our tiny kitchen in downtown and wanted to reach out to ISU students, so we jumped at the opportunity.”

The bakery has not had a grand opening yet and will probably do a ribbon cutting down the road, Gaff said. Right now they are focusing on the one year anniversary of their downtown location. Sugar Mama Bakery opened its first location at 405 N. Main St. on Jan. 24, 2013.

They are also offering a special treat to college students this week. Normally every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., college students who come into the bakery with their student I.D. receive a free mini cupcake with the purchase of a regular cupcake. However, Sugar Mama Bakery will be offering this discount all week instead of just Thursday in honor of their new location.

One of the Sugar Mama Bakery employees is currently an ISU student and is excited about the new opening as well.

“I think it is such a good opportunity for them,” bakery employee Christie Duffer said.

“It wasn’t even a year and they got the new space, so I think that is incredible.”

Duffer explained that she refers her friends to the bakery all the time, so having this new store right next to campus makes it easier for them and other students to commute.

Sugar Mama Bakery is also holding a special fundraising event during the month of January. All proceeds from their cupcake “Start Something S’more” will go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of McLean County.  Every Saturday in January, a representative comes to the Bloomington bakery from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and encourages customers to sign up. Everyone who does this gets a free cupcake. This is in support of National Mentoring Month.

The Uptown bakery has the same hours as the downtown location. It is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

They offer mini cupcakes for $1.75 and regular cupcakes for $3.50. They also offer cookies, custom cakes, cake pops called Sugarbabies and Coffee Hound coffee. There are T-shirts available as well.
