Illinois State Rec Center recently announced their spring 2014 group fitness schedule, adding many new classes for students to try. The fall semester did not have many new options and classes were scarce. Not only have new instructors been hired for this semester, but also there have been new ideas for students to get involved in group fitness classes. As we all know, after the first of the year everyone makes resolutions to get in shape but they don’t always last. People become bored with doing the same thing over and over at the gym, thus letting their goals of getting in shape go down the drain. I am personally very excited to try the rec center’s new classes and I believe they will receive a lot of interest. Here is a list of some of the new classes for the semester along with a brief description.
Kettlebells: Kettlebells is a strength training class designed for both men and women to get a total body workout. This class uses kettlebells to focus on strength and toning for both upper and lower body. Classes are held Tuesday at 5:30-6:30 p.m. and Thursday 3:45-4:45 p.m. in room 202.
Blacklight Ride: This class is pretty much just cycle in the dark. Blacklight right consists of rolling hills, interval training and this class takes your mind off that by being in the dark. It is offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in room 203.
INSANITY: High intensity intervals, quick movements and not much time to take a break. Insanity is a great workout for anyone who loves cardio as well as a total body workout. The class is held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings in room 201.
Kickboxing: Kickboxing is a high intensity class working the whole body through quick movements and cardio combined. Be prepared to sweat because this class will not be a piece of cake. Kickboxing is offered Tuesdays from 8-8:45 p.m. and Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in room 202.
Barre Toning: This class is all about control and toning mostly in your lower body through ballet technique. Barre toning has two components: floor work and barre. This class is a great option for anyone looking to tone. Barre Toning is offered twice a week at the rec center, Mondays 6:15-7:15 p.m. and Tuesdays 6:45-7:45 p.m., in room 202.
Hip Hop: A change up from the usual Zumba classes, hip hop works different muscles as well as provides different music selections. If you are looking for something more fast-paced, then this class is for you! The class is offered Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in fitness room 201.
