The Student Fitness Center has recently opened the Bouldering Cave, a more challenging climbing wall in which climbers are not assisted by ropes or harnesses.

The Bouldering Cave, the newest installment at the Student Fitness Center, has been opened since the beginning of the semester, but an official celebration of this alternative climbing wall will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Students are encouraged to convene in the climbing area of the Student Fitness Center to take advantage of activities, special giveaways, a prize climb for trying the Bouldering Cave and appearances by Reggie Redbird and members of the Student Government Association.

“Many of our current climbers have been anxiously awaiting the completion and opening of the bouldering cave,” Bill James, assistant director for adventure programs at Campus Recreation, said. “I am sure that now that it is complete, excitement for the grand opening will continue to grow.”

The Bouldering Cave involves a different climbing technique than the traditional rock climbing wall already available at the Student Fitness Center.

“Bouldering is rock climbing stripped down to the bare essentials. Leaving behind ropes and harnesses; just using climbing shoes and a spotter over safety mats,” James explained.

The challenge of bouldering comes into play as participants encounter a route or sequence of moves using balance, technique, strength and brain power, he added.

This 12-foot high and four-sided structure is designed for all levels of experience. Those who have not had a chance to try bouldering, as well as experienced climbers, are invited to take part in Wednesday’s celebration.

“Bouldering doesn’t require experience; just a willingness to try and some determination to succeed,” he said.

The Bouldering Cave celebration is a free event and open to anyone with a valid student ID for entrance into the Student Fitness Center.
