During this year’s Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Pre-Championship poll, Illinois State and Southern Illinois’ swimming and diving teams tied for second-place. The Redbirds and Salukis each earned 27 points for second behind first-place team, Missouri State, who received 36 points. Missouri State also earned all six first-place votes.
Southern holds the conference’s top time in 11 of the championship’s 20 events. Pamela Benitez, of the Salukis, has recorded the fastest time in the MVC this year in three of the championship events, the 200 (1:49.01), 500 (4:51.77) and the 1000-yard freestyle.
Southern is hosting the championship at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium in the SIU Student Rec Center. The three-day meet begins Thursday, Feb. 13, with an 11 a.m. preliminary session. The finals session will start at 6 p.m. On Friday, the sessions will also begin at the same times as on Thursday. Saturday’s sessions will take place at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
