What is it about Pinterest that makes it impossible to complete a homework assignment without pausing to scroll through boards and boards of creative ideas?
Pinterest, the visually appealing web tool, has been generating unique ideas for different interests since December of 2009.
Fans of the site have spent embarrassingly long periods of time on the consuming website, pinning ideas for a project they will probably never pursue.
But what is it about Pinterest that makes it so hard to stop scrolling, even when it’s 2 a.m. and you’ve yet to study for that exam tomorrow?
According to senior marketing major Ashley Lavorini, the act of pinning is never-ending.
“When I’m on Pinterest, I can literally scroll forever. Once I’m done looking at the category of women’s fashion, I move right on to health and fitness boards. It never ends,” Lavorini said.
Separated into various interests, the website makes it easy for users to select what kind of category they want to scroll through.
But Pinterest doesn’t rely solely on fashion boards, make-up tips and DIY nail ideas to appeal to their large audience.
The social media site is also a successful vehicle for a number of businesses, which may be why it is so addicting.
As someone who plans to work in the field of marketing, Lavorini can’t help but notice the marketing strategies that are showcased on Pinterest every day.
“A ton of companies use Pinterest to promote a product or expand their company’s mission. By representing themselves in a visual way, it makes it hard for us to look away. These companies are marketing products without us even knowing it,” Lavorini said.
On a less strategic level, Pinterest is simply a creative, ideal way to pass the time.
Boards for summer fashion, healthy dinner recipes and even engagement ring ideas are some of the most popular among users.
And because Pinterest is so accessible, it is easy to pin at home, in the classroom or even on the go.
According to senior human resources major Vicki Juran, Pinterest even enhanced her social life.
“I had a Pinterest party with all my girlfriends, and it was a huge hit. We each made some kind of appetizer that we found on the site and brought it to the party,” Juran said.
“My friends and I go on Pinterest all the time. We might as well put all that pinning to use.”
