I’m a true believer that change can be a good thing. I think new is good, and there is always room for growth. When I saw the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ jerseys, this is not the attitude I had. I was filled with confusion and the look on my face was one of disgust.
First impressions mean a lot, and my first impression of the jerseys was not a positive one. As I was looking at a picture on my computer screen I was taken back to the kid from School of Rock who says, “You’re tacky and I hate you.” Not that my computer would have answered back, but I really wanted to yell that as I was looking at the jerseys.
The first thing I noticed about the jerseys was the numbers. The numbers on the jersey reminded me of a digital alarm clock. It’s like the designers were trying to be a little too futuristic. A newly-designed uniform sounds like a great idea, but the jersey was changed way too much. Not only did the numbers change to a different font, but the Bucs are reinforcing the old colors.
The idea behind incorporating the old-school colors is a good one, but I just think there’s too much going on.
“Today marks the culmination of more than two years of research and planning to bring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into a new and exciting era of our history,” Buccaneers co-chairman Edward Glazer said in a statement.
“We worked closely with our partners at Nike to design a uniform that would set the standard for both design and functionality. The result is a sleek, modern design that honors our championship past while also establishing a new, bolder identity moving forward.”
Wait, it took them two years to become inspired by something that wakes them up in the morning? Call me a ‘hater,’ but I think they could’ve come up with something better than that. But I’m not the only one who isn’t a fan of the numbers.
Paul Lukas of ESPN.com said “it looks more like it was inspired by a 1980s digital alarm clock.” Alarm clock or score board, you can decide, but it just doesn’t look professional per say, or NFL.
According to the Buccaneers website, the number font was “inspired by historical Buccaneer blade carvings.” That’s a cool concept, but I’m still thinking about a digital clock, not a blade carving.
Another football aficionado, Darin Grant who writes for NBC Sports Pro Football Talk, had a few things to say about the new uniforms. He opened up his response about the uniforms saying, “The Buccaneers unveiled their new uniforms Monday morning, and it appears they may be considering joining the Arena League.”
I’m sure he isn’t the only one who saw Arena Football League (AFL) when observing the new uniforms. If the jersey doesn’t scream AFL, I’m not sure what it’s screaming because it’s not NFL. If I had to guess whose team those jerseys were for, I wouldn’t have guessed the Buccaneers. I actually have no idea what my guess would be.
I’ve been pretty negative and harsh about the new design, so I’ll let up a bit and say something positive. The Bucs also changed the helmet and the logo on the helmet. I really don’t mind the new helmet so much. But it almost seems like it was made for the Buccaneers’ senior citizen aged fans. The logo is huge, and if you have trouble seeing, there’s no chance you’ll miss it. But it’s not horrible to look at.
As much as I don’t like the new look, I’m sure it’ll grow on me. I wasn’t asked to design the uniforms so I guess it doesn’t really matter what I think. But change takes time getting used to. Once football season rolls around, we’ll see if I’m still saying, “You’re tacky and I hate you.”
