Students are invited to purchase Mother’s Day gifts at the CUP Craft ceramic sale, which will be taking place on Thursday in the Airport Lounge at Centennial West.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the registered student organization (RSO) Student Independent League in Ceramic Arts (SILICA) will be sponsoring the event in which students have the chance to buy handmade cups created by fellow ISU students.
“The cups are made by students who are members of the RSO, many whom are ceramic majors, art education majors or studio majors with a concentration in ceramics,” Jo Hart, head organizer of CUP Craft, said.
Cups range in cost from $10 to $30, so they are affordable for any budget, Hart said.
With each cup purchase, students will also receive a free cup of coffee, tea or iced tea.
The cup sale is put on each spring in an effort to raise money for SILICA.
The earnings from Thursday’s sale will help fund visiting ceramic artists, give students the chance to travel to the national conference for ceramics each year, as well as various other opportunities that arise throughout the school year.
“The cups are priced at an affordable price for an object that is handmade. The students making the cups are at all skill levels and we are promoting and encouraging the public to buy handmade,” Hart said.
“There’s nothing like drinking your coffee from a handmade cup,” she added.
SILICA’s mission statement is “to enrich the growing community of ceramic artists at ISU by providing a platform for discussion and access to visiting ceramic artists.”
Students of the ceramic program work to learn the materials and methods that are involved with creating ceramic art. Ceramic production includes clay and glaze design as well as mold making.
The RSO meets at 12:15 p.m. every other Wednesday in the Ceramics Area on the first floor of Centennial West.
