Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL) presented the Illinois State Athletics Redbird Arena/Horton Field House crew with a 2014 Hero Award. The ceremony was held at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center on Friday, June 29.
Awards from SOILL recognize individuals, families, businesses, or groups who provide a strong commitment to the organization and create a positive environment for SOILL athletes. Facilities crew members who were recognized included Keith Smith, Adam Southwick, Dave Willert, Paul Crawford, Lucas Roach, Jonathon Dorrell, Tim Sulaski, and Zach Collins. This group of individuals worked hard to make SOILL events at the university possible.
For more than three decades, the Facilities crew has gone above and beyond in working with the SOILL sports staff in organizing events. Every event received the crew’s full attention, and members worked tirelessly to improve each event. Every event falls under the control of the Field House crew, and it makes sure every single person in attendance is taken care of, regardless of the amount of accommodations.
Through hard work and continuous efforts, the Facilities crew has done an exceptional job with putting a positive brand on Illinois State University. These award recipients are reasons why groups such as SOILL return to Illinois State with new events, and the Facilities crew has welcomed them with open arms.
Although many faces of the Facilities crew have come and gone in 36 years, the legacy of being able to provide unheralded service and make the extra effort in every single event still remains.
