Not only is the new academic school year beginning at Illinois State, but ISU athletics are also going to be in full swing in the upcoming weeks. The Illinois State Women’s volleyball team will look to build off of last season’s success. In 2013, the Redbirds finished the regular season with a mark of 19-13 and a conference record of 11-7. Illinois State fell in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament to the eventual tournament champions, Wichita State Shockers.
Illinois State will kickoff its season in Eugene, Oregon to square off against teams from around the country. They will play their first match on Friday, August 29 against the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas. The Birds will also go up against Ohio State as well as the University of Oregon. ISU also travels to Columbia, Missouri for the University of Missouri Tournament and to Washington D.C for the George Washington Tournament. Conference play will begin on September 19, when ISU will travel to Wichita, Kansas to square-off against conference foe Wichita State. The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament will kickoff the weekend of November 27.
The Birds lost four graduating seniors from last year’s squad, but in return gained six newcomers for this season. Illinois State will be welcoming five incoming freshman as well as one junior transfer. Junior outside hitter Ashley Rosch will look to continue where she left off from last season. Rosch compiled a team best of 441.5 points, 389 kills, and 3.21 kills per set. Rosch was also a member of the Missouri Valley Conference First-Team. Another contributor to the team was Senior Emily Orrick. She totaled 572 digs while averaging 4.85 digs per set (both team highs).
Be sure to catch the Women’s Volleyball team open the season up this Saturday at 1:00 pm. in the annual Red vs. White Scrimmage at Redbird Arena. Show your support for the team as they will display their talent in an inter-squad match.
