Illinois State University did a 23-year long survey on over 5,000 people about the first time they ever had sex. Studies show that losing your virginity has become a much more positive experience.
Today, most adults can recall the first time that they ever had sex, but for many of them it was not a pleasant experience. In the past, many people lost their virginity to someone they may have just met, or with whom they did not have a strong relationship, making it something they do not want to relive.
Now losing one’s virginity is a much different experience, for both males and females. What is different now is that people are more likely to wait to lose their virginity until they are in a committed relationship with someone. Relationships are now built on friendship and trust, and once that is established it becomes intimate.
For males, losing their v-card is not as big of a deal as it used to be. Many do not consider it to be a rite of passage anymore. Now that most males who have sex for the first time are in a relationship with their partner, they do not feel as much pressure to perform as well for their first time because they are comfortable with their partner. This helps to reduce performance anxiety.
For females, losing their virginity has become a much better experience. Most females hope to have sex for the first time with someone they love, trust and can have an intimate experience with. Since many women today are waiting to lose their virginity until they are in a committed relationship, they are experiencing the intimacy they have been asking for, which in return makes their first time a special and memorable experience.
Another change that has occurred for younger generations is that they are waiting to lose their virginity. More and more college students come to college as virgins, because they have not found the right partner to have sex with for the first time.
Often once they get to college, they finally lose their virginity because they are more mature and feel they have better connections with their partners, can trust them and may even be thinking about marriage.
Waiting longer to find the right person to have sex with for the first time also has reduced the number of partners each person has, which in return reduces the number of STD’s, as well as teen pregnancy. By the time the newer generation has found a committed relationship, they are usually out of high school, maybe even college. If they do get pregnant they are in a much better situation to raise a child.
Today, losing one’s virginity is much more a positive and intimate experience than it has been in the past. Hopefully, within the next few years having sex for the first time will become even more of a positive experience for young lovers.
