The women’s volleyball team finished the weekend in Eugene, Ore. with a record of 2-1, which was good enough for second place in the University of Oregon Tournament. The Redbird’s three opponents this weekend were University of Central Arkansas, Ohio State University and the University of Oregon.
In the opening match versus Central Arkansas, Illinois State defeated the Bears in four sets to start their season 1-0. Junior Ashley Rosch led the team with 18 kills, while senior Kaitlyn Early finished the match with 43 assists. Freshman Jaelyn Keene stepped up for Illinois State, tallying eight kills, three service aces and four blocks.
In the first match of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Redbirds squared off against the Ohio State Buckeyes. This five-set affair with the Buckeyes came down to the wire. The birds clinched the first set before falling in the second and third sets. They edged Ohio State in the fourth and fifth set with scores of 25-23 and 16-14. Once again, Rosch contributed a match high 21 kills, while teammate Emily Schneider racked up six blocks. Jaelyn Keene recorded the match-winning service ace to put Ohio State away.
Illinois State played the host of the tournament in the final match, the Oregon Ducks. Like the previous match, the Redbirds jumped out to a 1-0 set lead. Oregon struck back, winning the second and third sets. Illinois state forced a fifth set by winning the fourth with a score of 25-22. Early notched 40 assists, while Emily Orrick tallied 25 digs. Ashley Rosch and Emily Schneider were named to the all-tournament team.
The Redbirds will travel to Columbia, Mo. next weekend to participate in the Missouri Tiger Invitational.
