This Sunday, April 11, honors fraternity Phi Sigma Pi will be hosting a three-on-three basketball tournament to raise money for a local domestic violence shelter.

“The Neville House is a safe-haven for victims of domestic violence in the Bloomington-Normal community. They are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide shelter to anyone who needs it, they never turn anyone away,” Teressa Little, Phi Sigma Pi philanthropy chair and coordinator of the event, said.

Due to recent state budget cuts, Little said that the Neville House needs support now more than ever.

“The Neville House is a local organization that has such a positive impact on the community. Domestic violence is an issue that often gets overlooked and is rarely discussed—we’re hoping that the basketball tournament helps bring light to this issue within ISU and around the community,” Little continued.

The three-on-three fundraising event will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Horton Field House, while registration begins at noon. The cost to participate is $5 a person and $15 per team. There will be three brackets: men’s, women’s, and coed. Prizes from local businesses will be awarded to the winners of each bracket.

Participants can register in advance at the Student Involvement Center in the Bone or can elect to register the day of the tournament in Horton.

“We’re hoping for a good turnout—close to 200 people have RSVPed to our Facebook invitation and more and more people are registering in advance—the more participants we have, the better,” Little added.

In addition to Phi Sigma Pi, F.L.A.M.E, Red Tassel/Mortar Board and Sigma Sigma Sigma are co-sponsoring the event. Each participating group will host information tables at the event.

Amanda Mahoney, president of Phi Sigma Pi, has been helping Little prepare for the event since last September.

“In previous years, we have done a lot of fundraising for national organizations—this year we are excited to be doing work that will wholly benefit the community,” Mahoney said.

“The Neville House supports battered women and women dealing with domestic violence. A lot of people don’t know that this facility exists within the community and we are glad to help get the house more recognition,” she continued.

One hundred percent of the tournament’s proceeds will go to benefit the Neville House. In addition to participation fares, Phi Sigma Pi will be selling t-shirts and will be hosting a raffle to aid the cause.

To learn more about the event, check out Phi Sigma Pi’s Facebook page or inquire at the Student Involvement Center.

Mahoney said that she hopes for a good amount of support from students at ISU.

“Everyone should come check out the event, even if it’s just to get out of the house on Sunday,” she said. “It will be a great time and a great way to show support for the community.”
