Normal Police arrested a suspect last Friday related to the shooting of a female ISU student on Aug. 18 outside of an apartment in the 700 block of North Adelaide Street.

Twenty-three-year-old Marshall D. Smith of Bloomington has been charged with aggravated battery, discharging a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm near a school in connection to the shooting.

Police apprehended Smith in the 1100 block of North Evans Street, but they have not established any sort of connection between the shooter and the victim.

"There was a gathering on the 700 block of North Adelaide, and during that gathering there were individuals who had a disagreement and a conflict arose," Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner said. "As a result, shots were fired."

The victim was shot during the altercation between two individuals and transported to Advocate BroMenn Medical Center where she was treated for non-life-threatening wounds. Her name and age have not been released due to privacy issues.

"She’s recovering from her injuries," Bleichner said. "She has been discharged from the hospital."

Smith remains in custody after his bond was set at $1 million. He is expected to stand before a judge later this week.
