On Tuesday, September 23, at the Linkins Dining Center in West Campus, the Green Team and Campus Dining will join forces to deliver a hearty meal of local foods to the ISU campus.

Enid Cardinal, sustainability coordinator for the Green Team, expressed her excitement for the event.

"With this event we are trying to make eating an experience," she said. "Most people are disconnected from their meals."

"They don't think about where it comes from or how it got to their plate. This meal will allow people to enjoy food grown right here in the Bloomington-Normal area and meet the people who grew it."

The food deliveries have been coming since Friday and will continue up until the time of the dinner, Cardinal explained. Because of the nature of local food and weather, she was unable to provide an exact menu for the evening but did elaborate on the types of courses that would be provided.

"We received our pork for the entrée on Friday [and] we should be receiving our vegetables on Monday or Tuesday," Cardinal said. "There will be a fruit-based dessert. It will be a berry-centered dish."

Junior special education major Courtney Brokamp is also excited about the dinner.

"It's nice because we will have food that is fresh and not from the dining center. It's a pretty cool experience because we would never have this kind of thing in the suburbs," Brokamp said.

Cardinal also explained that this meal was a sort of pilot meal as a part of the Green Team's efforts to "green up" campus dining.

The reliability of local foods can vary, however. With this meal Campus Dining Services and the Green Team will be able to gauge how feasible it would be to work with local food growers.

"In other cultures eating is about enjoying your food as well as your company. This is our attempt to get away from the fast-food concept, because it is healthier digestively and socially to sit down and eat a meal with a group of people," Cardinal said.
