As of the first of May, American Airlines will no longer offer complimentary blankets and pillows to coach passengers on all domestic flights, including Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

The airline’s recent announcement falls under similar actions taken by JetBlue and U.S. Airways, which charge $7 for a blanket-and-pillow set, as well as Virgin America, who charges $12 for a sleep set that includes a pillow, blanket, eye mask and ear plugs.

Tim Smith, spokesperson for American Airlines, said the new policy was decided with the utmost care.

“American evaluates all aspects of the business to ensure that economic decisions are prudent and strategic for the long-term success of the company,” he said.

Blankets and pillows will still be available for all domestic flights over two hours, but will cost $8.

Smith said if customers choose to buy the bundle, they will be able to use it on later flights or for other purposes.

“Premium class cabins on all flights and all cabins on international flights and South America flights will continue to offer a complimentary blanket for use in-flight,” he said.

Smith said the new pillow and blanket pack will include a blue fleece blanket with an inflatable neck pillow.

There is also a $10 coupon for a $30 or greater purchase at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

The new policy has not set too well with students.

Approximately 22 of 25 students in a strategic marketing class thought the idea was, at first, not ideal for today’s society.

The class, which set aside its first 10 minutes to discuss the new policy, gave those students the chance to discuss their ideas and try to hinder their fellow students’ opinions.

A second poll taken after the brief debate yielded several reconsiderations, when only 20 of 25 students continued to think the new policy was a bad idea.

Zach Greenberger, a senior marketing major and marketing consultant for the Daily Vidette, said the additional fees will most likely turn away more and more customers.

“For those who are used to doing the same thing, and even families with two to three kids, all of a sudden they will be paying $20 more for something they are not used to doing, and that will turn away more business,” he said.

Jamie Noirot, a senior marketing major, said the new policy is not ideal.

“The majority of people I have seen use those pillows and blankets are older, and if you travel so much, you should just bring your own stuff,” she said.
