Not even two years after being built, the Student Fitness Center has already been recognized for a citation within a national magazine. Over 900,000 visits have been made to this building, which is honorably becoming known to the nation. “The facility was awarded with a citation in the ‘Specialized Facility’ category for the American School and University Magazine’s 2012 Architectural Portfolio,” Andy Read, assistant director of marketing for Campus Recreation and Student Fitness Center, said. The citation representing the Student Fitness Center is acknowledging the physical appearance of the building. “The citation recognizes the design of the facility by architects Dewberry and RDG Planning and Design,” Read explained. “The magazine itself serves the nation’s K-12 and higher education administrators that are involved with a variety of education facilities.”
With a number of other fitness centers being looked at, a jury judged ISU’s Student Fitness Center as the top in this category. “The magazine looked at a variety of facilities, but the judges noted that ‘the building’s transparency allows for safety and security of students,’” Read explained. “They also applauded the abundance of natural light in the building.” This monthly magazine will include ISU’s Student Fitness Center’s citation in its November issue. For those interested in reading the American School & University magazine but do not have a subscription, a digital version can be found on the magazine’s website, Read said. Though this is the first time the Student Fitness Center has received a citation within this magazine, there have been other awards as well. “The Student Fitness Center was named one of nine recipients of the 2012 Outstanding Sports Facilities from NIRSA and also won an Innovative Architecture and Design Award from Rec Management Magazine,” Read said. Receiving any award is honorable and the Student Fitness Center still has many years to come with plenty more awards entailed in the future. “It is rewarding to receive this national recognition,” Dawn Sanner, executive director of Campus Recreation and Student Fitness Center, said. “We are very proud of the Student Fitness Center and the many opportunities that it provides to the campus community.” For more information on the Student Fitness Center on campus, visit CampusRecreation.IllinoisState.edu/facilities/student-fitness-center. |
