Shopaholics stay away. Wanelo is a new and highly dangerous way to shop. The website allows users to surf through hundreds of products that they can buy and save to wish lists. Much like Pinterest, Wanelo is full of unique items. Wall-hanging fish tanks, pastel-colored clothes, and massive amounts of shoes and jewelry fill the endless, scrolling pages. The difference between Wanelo and Pinterest is the ability for users to purchase every item. Imagine having all of the clothing on your Pinterest fashion board in your actual closet. Wanelo not only allows you to do this, but many items are a great deal. In addition to driving traffic to other websites, Wanelo has become a social shopping network. Users exchange shopping lists and can see trending products on the website’s homepage. Trending items are categorized by hashtags, much like Twitter. Varshavskaya also hired on Modcloth and Etsy workers to help develop the website — Venturebeat.com. It is no wonder that the site includes a large amount of small business startups, such as Etsy shops. Overall, the website is a hit. Take the number of Pinterest-addicted teenage girls and double it for Wanelo. I found out about the website through my teenage sister. She has recently decided to get a reload-able MasterCard Gift Card to fuel her Wanelo addiction. She is not alone. The Wanelo shopping community saves approximately 100,000 items a day, and the website includes items from about 20,000 stores, according to Venturebeat. However, is there a little bit of fault in those numbers? Does the website fuel materialism a bit too much? Maybe. The target market is obviously girls ages 13 and up. Much of the clothing looks as though it came straight from Victoria’s Secret and Forever 21, which is probably because much of it did. Also, few items on the website look as though they would fit a person above a size five. Targeting a wider audience might be the next step that Wanelo needs to take in order to stay on top of the competition. For now, the website is growing and could very well take over the Pinterest craze. |
