ISU students were shaken this morning after a bus accident involving a semi truck and Redbird Express bus. Connect Transit received a phone call alerting staff that a Redbird Express bus had been hit near Redbird Arena within the first few hours of operation. Dave White, connect transit safety and training director, expressed relief that the accident did not result in any serious injuries amongst passengers.

“We received a call of an accident of a semi striking a campus shuttle bus and we were hoping that it was not as bad as it sounds,” White said. The semi truck that was initially headed east bound was making a left turn along a side street next to Redbird Arena when the driver misjudged his turn radius and made contact with the front of the bus, White said. The campus shuttle was at a stop signs waiting to make a left hand turn to head towards Uptown Normal. “The trailer portion of the truck made contact with the front of the bus and shattered the front window, broke the side mirror and caused significant cosmetic damage to the bus,” White said.

No injuries were reported in the accident. “Since it was a very low-speed impact, we are really fortunate that nobody was hurt in the accident because due to the size of the vehicles involved it could have been much more serious,” White said. Damages to the semi truck and the bus are extensive and costly but should be repaired in no time. “It looks pretty bad but our staff started working today to repair the cosmetic damages so that we can get the shuttle running again,” White said.
