Illinois State gymnastics was defeated by Ohio State University on Sunday resulting in a score of 195.950-192.775. The Buckeyes, who came into the meet ranked as the 20th best team in the NCAA, improved to the 18th spot after their win over ISU.

Although OSU managed to beat  ISU in every event, standout sophomore Sami King took third place in the all-around competition with a cumulative score of 38.850 points. She placed in three of the four events, with the exception  of vault. She took first place on her floor routine, with 9.85 points, and tied for first place on the uneven bars with a score of 9.825 points. She also took third-place on the balance beam with a score of 9.875 points.

Right behind King in the all-around competition were seniors Kim Genereux, with a score of 38.725 points, and Tori Sarantakis, with 38.575 points. The two took fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Despite King’s performance, the Redbirds struggled with injuries and other lineup difficulties.

“We had to make a lot of adjustments this week,” head coach Bob Conkling said. “Amanda Mohler could not compete bars or beam because we needed to rest her. We also had to take Kim Caron out of the bars and floor lineup because she had a minor shoulder problem. This affected the bars team score. We did okay on the other three events, but we still need to step it up as a team.”

The loss was not desirable, but the Redbirds honored their seniors at their last home meet of the season. Seniors include Apollonia Barrientos, Kim Caron, Genereux,  Sarantakis, Chelsie Seplowin and Marissa Stom. Of the graduating seniors, Barrientos, Genereux, and Sarantakis all managed to place on their final performance in Normal.

The ’Birds will compete at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the University of Denver.
