Starting as a way to create more civic involvement in the surrounding community, the Fell Hall Call to Action has been announced for the current academic year.

This year, the Call to Action campaign supports the Navarro family of Normal, who lost their house to a fire earlier this year.
Graduate student Christine Doman, whose COM 110 section is participating in the campaign, said the family had no previous involvement in the decision process.
“I saw the fire happen and since I’ve lived near them all summer, I saw their kids playing in the yard and just seeing the destruction the fire caused, I wanted to do something,” she said.“It just so happened that my students wanted to do the same thing.”
Funds are being raised through a bake sale and student-submitted donations. Doman said her students presented information to other COM 110 classes in hopes of getting some physical donations.
Freshman general student Andrea Darimont, who is in Doman’s section of COM 110, is part of the call logistics group. She said her duties include making sure everyone is where they need to be as well as keeping calendars for deadlines and appointments.
“When the program was first introduced to our class, I observed it as an opportunity to step up and work together with the rest of the students in my class,” she said.
“For our class, it is an all-student project but to the rest of ISU, it is a chance to step up and help out a family in need.”
The bake sale continues until Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Fell Hall. In addition to the support services, the campaign is also spreading awareness about renters insurance, a rarely advertised service.
The insurance helps apartment residents protect their valuables in case of fire, flood or theft. The campaign hopes to present enough information to students about the insurance in order to help them make the choice to purchase it.
“They did a lot of work to make all of this happen and it’s fantastic to see the outreach from the community,” Doman said.
Darimont thinks that the campaign is important, and stresses that students should familiarize themselves with it and get involved where possible.
“Being a freshman in college until now has seemed to be all about me and doing things for myself to help me adjust to this new environment,” she said.“It is time to give back to others in the community to adjust to the new environment they were put in to.”
