On May 9, a black graduation celebration titled Umoja will be held in order to celebrate the achievements of graduating students of color. This celebration has become a controversial occasion and students of different ethnicities hold various opinions of the scheduled event.

It seems that most guest pieces are written by individuals who express opinions on matters to which they adamantly disagree, or when an organization is on the cusp of making an important decision.  Indeed, both intentions fuel the reason for this piece.

I have been a lover of cats all of my life. Most of my childhood was spent in a barn (I live on a farm) playing with cats. That sounds pretty pathetic, but I turned out okay (I think).

As soon as some individuals reach the legal working age, or receive a work permit, they desire to work in order to obtain their own funds. For this reason, mostly everyone starts off with work experience at a part-time job. Beginning part-time employees tend to take advantage of their employment and not realize the importance of excelling at an undistinguished employer.

Let’s face it: gender roles are everywhere. For those of you who don’t know what they are, they are basically the set of standards made by society for males and females. After reading “Gentlemen disappearing one day at a time” in the April 23 issue of The Vidette, the gender roles ruling over our culture became extremely apparent to me.
