Former Illinois State baseball standout Paul DeJong (14) celebrates a moment after hitting a grand slam home run at Duffy Bass Field against the University of Illinois on April 15, 2014. Since his playing days at ISU, the achievements continue to pile up for the former Redbird walk-on. DeJong, the current starting shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, was named Sunday to the National League All-Star team. At the midway point of the St. Louis season, DeJong is hitting .260 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI. He will join shortstop Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs, who was voted in as the starting shortstop of the NL. Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story was the other shortstop selected as a reserve. DeJong was the only Cardinals player selected as an All-Star. The All-Star Game will be played July 9 in Cleveland.
