Tight End James O'Shaughnessy celebrates as he runs into the end zone for his first touchdown of the game.
Despite a dramatic 58-yard touchdown run with 1:38 remaining in the game by Illinois State’s Tre Roberson, the Redbirds fell to North Dakota State in a thrilling FCS title game in Frisco, Texas, on Jan. 10, 2015. Moments after Roberson’s heroics, eventual NFL star Carson Wentz scored the game-winning touchdown with 37 seconds to give the Bison the title. At the time it was NDSU’s fourth straight FCS crown. Illinois State has not been back to the championship game since. This season, however, Illinois State nearly extracted revenge. The Redbirds fell to NDSU in a tight 9-3 contest on Dec. 14 at the Fargo Dome in the semi-finals round. With that win, top-seeded NDSU now faces No. 2 seed James Madison for the 2020 FCS title at 11 a.m. Saturday. The game will be televised on ABC TV.
