The last traces of the long-standing Mitsubishi plant near interstate 74 could be scrubbed away as the Normal Town Council voted Monday to change the name of Mitsubishi Motorway to fit its new occupant Rivian.

The stretch of highway that leads to the plant will now bear the name Rivian Motorway per the company’s request to help marketing efforts and increase investor interest.

The change did not come easy though. It ended in a 4-2 vote after over a half-hour of discussion, according to WGLT.

Rivian is currently underway to transition from traditional auto manufacturing processes to an electrified lineup, producing electric vehicles. Thus, changing the name of the road that leads to the plant from Sakura Lane to Electric Avenue was also approved by the council.

The changes will still need to be approved by The City of Bloomington, McLean County and the Emergency Telephone System Board before going into effect.
