The Normal area has been placed under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Saturday by the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

According to the NWS, severe thunderstorms are likely through a large, 27-county region of central, east central and west central Illinois during the watch period. Storms could also include hail up to the size of golf balls and wind gusts of up to 70 mph. The watch indicated that “several… possibly strong” tornadoes are likely to be associated with the storm system

The NWS urges residents to be alert to storm developments and to know where to take shelter if a storm occurs. The NWS also urged residents to have multiple means of receiving warnings. The storms are likely to move quickly.

In addition to Bloomington-Normal, other communities facing the storm threat include Springfield, Decatur, Jacksonville, Havana, Lincoln, Pekin, Peoria, Canton, Galesburg and Champaign.
