Eighteen-year veteran of Normal Police Department Brian Williams was arrested on theft-related charges following the disappearance of $12,000 from the scene of an overdose on Nov. 25.

Officers were called to the scene of a possible overdose on Nov. 25, according to a statement from NPD. Following that call the department was notified that $12,000 was missing from the residence.

NPD received assistance from Illinois State Police in investigating the case. According to WGLT, the person who reported the money missing received calls from an unknown source saying that the case needed to be dropped to get the money back. WGLT also said that an operation was set up to catch the thief in an exchange at a gas station. There, Williams was arrested and charged.

NPD will run a parallel investigation to the Illinois State University Police. Williams has been placed on administrative leave following the results of an internal investigation.

“The department urges everyone to not rush to judgement and to allow time for the process to run its course and come to a factual conclusion before making any judgement,” the statement reports. “As this involves both a criminal and a personnel matter, there is no further information that will be released at this time.”

In an article written in 2012, The Vidette reported on Williams as a crime scene investigator. Williams said he joined the force as a patrol officer and moved up to an investigator.
