There are few upsides to 2020's cancellation of NCAA athletics due to the coronavirus outbreak.
But Illinois State University track and field Director Jeff Bovee sees the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championship that the Redbirds won at the beginning of March.
"A silver lining is that we had the MVC indoor championship that we won," Bovee said. "We did expect several to compete in the outdoor championship as well."
With nearly 20 senior student-athletes, the next step is uncertain with decisions to make.
"All of them I think started with anger," Bovee said. "You have student-athletes that feel like they did not get to finish their careers on their terms. The next step is to see how life matches up with those seniors."
Bovee notes how rapidly the situation has changed.
"We have no idea what is going to happen day to day week to week. We are just taking it day by day. We are trying to take care of student-athletes first and foremost," Bovee said.
"The playbook is being written as we go about things from day to day. With Twitter and social media, our athletes were hearing about things before we told them. At that point, we were just reacting."
