High expectations have been set for the Illinois State football squad for the upcoming season, and a recent selection for the Redbirds to finish third in the Missouri Valley Football Conference reflects this.

These high expectations also led to the 'Birds being ranked No. 15 in the Preseason STATS FCS poll per a release Monday.

The Redbirds are among five teams from the MVFC chosen in the poll. Defending national champion North Dakota State was ranked first, while South Dakota State was ranked third.

Indiana State was picked at No. 16 behind the 'Birds, while Northern Iowa was tabbed at No. 18.
